Henry T. Hazard (born July 31, 1844 in Evanston , Illinois , †  August 7, 1921 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American politician . Between 1889 and 1892 he was mayor of Los Angeles.

Career

In 1853, Henry Hazard and his parents came with a team of oxen via Salt Lake City to San Bernardino , California. Soon after, the family moved to Tulare County . He attended the public schools in his new home. In 1863 and 1864 he graduated from San Jose College . In the meantime he worked in various professions, for example in agriculture or as a stagecoach driver. He used the money to finance a law degree at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor . After being admitted to the bar in 1868, he began working in this profession in Los Angeles. At first he was a criminal defense attorney. He later specialized in real estate and patent law. In addition to his practice as a lawyer, Hazard was successful in other business areas and made a substantial fortune. In 1873 he became a member of the volunteer fire department.

Politically, Hazard joined the Republican Party . At the time, he advocated the division of California into two states, but this was not implemented. He also campaigned for the maintenance and expansion of the port of San Pedro . From 1880 to 1882 he was a legal representative for the City of Los Angeles and between 1882 and 1888 he was a member of the California State Assembly . In his capacity as legal representative for the City of Los Angeles, he successfully sued the railroad for restitution of land that was not directly needed for the rails and rail operations. In this way, a lot of land fell back to the city, which it could include in its plans.

In 1889 Hazard was elected mayor of Los Angeles. He held this office between February 25, 1889 and December 5, 1892. Among other things, he campaigned for the creation of parks and playgrounds. He also enforced a law that the city treasury had to be kept in a bank account. It wasn't common before. Oil was found in the Los Angeles area during Hazard's tenure as mayor, sparking an economic boom. For reasons that have not been handed down, Hazard must have resigned one week before the regular end of his term of office as mayor, because the office was temporarily exercised for this one week in December 1892 by William Hartshorn Bonsall .

After the end of his tenure as mayor, Henry Hazard continued his previous activities. He died on August 7, 1921 in Los Angeles.
