Meredith Pinxton Snyder (born October 22, 1858 in Winston-Salem , North Carolina , †  April 7, 1937 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American politician . Between 1896 and 1921 he was mayor of Los Angeles three times.

Career

Meredith Snyder attended public schools in his home country. Since 1880 he lived in California. He became a successful businessman and founded the MP Snyder Shoe Company in 1892 . He later entered the banking business and founded the California Savings Bank in 1904 , of which he was president for 14 years. He was also temporarily president of the Home Telephone Company in San Diego . He was also on the board of several other companies. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

In 1896, Snyder was first elected mayor of Los Angeles. He held this office between December 16, 1896 and December 15, 1898. In 1898 he was defeated by Frederick Eaton of the Republican Party . Between December 12, 1900 and December 8, 1904 he was again mayor of his city. He campaigned for the improvement of the infrastructure. This included a better connection to the port of San Pedro . In addition, the emerging car traffic required an adaptation of the infrastructure. In 1904 he was not confirmed in office. In 1917 he failed with another candidacy for his old office. Between 1904 and 1907 he sat on the city ​​council . From 1913 to around 1917 he was the Public Service Commissioner for his city. Between July 1, 1919 and July 1, 1921, Snyder was mayor of Los Angeles for the last time. He tried to adapt the infrastructure to the requirements of the time. In 1921 he was not re-elected. After the end of his time as mayor in 1921, he was no longer politically active. Meredith Snyder died on April 7, 1937. He was a member of several organizations, clubs and associations. Among other things, he belonged to the Freemasons .
