Tom Bradley
Thomas J. "Tom" Bradley (born December 29, 1917 in Calvert , Texas , † September 29, 1998 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) and from 1973 to 1993 for five terms mayor of Los Angeles .
Bradley was the first and so far only black mayor of the city and also the longest-serving one to this day. In his election in 1973 he was only the second African American in this position in a major city in the USA to Carl Stokes in Cleveland ( Ohio ). The first African-American mayor of a US city ever was Robert C. Henry in Springfield (Ohio). Prior to his rise to mayor, Bradley was a member of the Los Angeles City Council from 1963 to 1973 .
In 1982 and 1986 Bradley ran unsuccessfully for governor of California , both times defeated by Republican George Deukmejian . While his defeat in 1982 was extremely narrow with one percentage point behind (49 against 48%), he lost a significant amount in 1986 with 60 against 37%. The theory of the Bradley effect represents an attempt to interpret the defeat of 1982 , which was unexpected after the previous opinion polls .
