Thomas E. Rowan ( 1842 - 1901 ) was an American politician . Between 1892 and 1894 he was Mayor of Los Angeles , California .

Career

The sources on Thomas Rowan are very poor. He lived at least temporarily in Los Angeles. Nothing is known about his youth and school education. In 1856 he opened a bakery with his father. He later worked in the banking industry. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . In the meantime he was City Treasurer for Los Angeles. He held the same office in Los Angeles County . In 1892 he was elected mayor of Los Angeles. He held this office between December 12, 1892 and December 12, 1894. After the collapse of two banks, he was involved in collecting funds for an employment program for the injured workers. The source leaves open whether that was before or during his time as mayor. During his time as mayor, an electric tram or railroad was founded ( Pasadena-Los Angeles electric Railroad ). At that time there was also a railway strike, which was ended by the intervention of the state government. Thomas Rowan died in 1901.
