Charles E. Sebastian

Charles Edward Sebastian (born March 30, 1873 in Farmington , Missouri , †  April 17, 1929 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American politician . He was mayor of Los Angeles in 1915 and 1916.

Career

Charles Sebastian came to Southern California as a child . He became a police officer in the City of Los Angeles around 1894. In this profession he continued to rise. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party . In 1911 he became the Los Angeles Police Chief. He held this office until 1915. In that year he applied for the office of mayor there. During the campaign, allegations of sexual abuse of minors were raised. He was even temporarily arrested by his own police. But he was acquitted of the allegations and elected mayor with a narrow majority. He held this office between July 1, 1915 and his resignation on September 2, 1916. During this time, the urban area of ​​Los Angeles was enlarged by some incorporations. Sebastian's resignation came after further allegations were made against him in a local newspaper. Then he withdrew from politics. He died in Los Angeles on April 17, 1929.
