John G. Nichols

John Greg Nichols (born December 29, 1812 in Onondaga County , New York , †  January 22, 1898 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American politician . In the years 1852 and 1853 and again from 1856 to 1859 he was mayor of the city of Los Angeles.

Career

John Nichols came to California even before joining the United States in 1850. He was a trader, businessman and architect and / or building contractor. He lived in one of the first stone houses in Los Angeles. His son was the city's first American-born baby in 1851. The year before, Nichols opened an English-language school in his home.

In 1852 he was elected mayor of Los Angeles. He held this post between May 4, 1852 and May 3, 1853. After the resignation of Stephen Clark Foster on September 22, 1856 and a short transition period from Manuel Requena , he was re-elected to this office, which he held after several re-elections between October 4, 1856 and May 9, 1859. Politically, he was now a member of the Democratic Party . During his two terms in office, Nichols worked to establish the American administrative system in his Mexican city.

After the end of his time as mayor, John Nichols was no longer politically active. He died in Los Angeles on January 22, 1898.
