Calvert is a city in Robertson County in the US state of Texas in the United States .
geography
The city is located in the middle east of Texas, in the Texas Golden Triangle between Dallas , Houston and Austin , 150 km east of Austin, 100 km southeast of Waco and has a total area of 10.1 km 2 without any significant water surface.
history
Calvert was founded in 1868 and named after Robert Calvert , a plantation owner and initiator of the county's railroad construction. Until 1879, the city was also the seat of the county government ( County Seat ). The former district court building made of red brick, which is now in private hands, was built in 1876.
In 1873 many of the residents died of yellow fever, in 1899 the city was flooded and largely destroyed and two years later a large fire destroyed the business district, whereupon the population decreased from 3322 in 1900 to 2099 by 1920.

According to the 2000 census, 1,426 people lived here in 574 households and 374 families. The population density was 141.5 inhabitants per km 2 . The racial the population was composed of 36.89% White, 52.38% African American, 0.42% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, and 8.77% other ethnic groups. About 1.47% were mixed race and 14.87% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 574 households, 27.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 34.7% of these were married couples living together. 25.4% were single mothers and 34.7% were non-families. 32.4% of all households were single households and there were people living in 16.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 3.07.
29.7% of the population were under 18 years old, 7.1% 18 to 24, 21.9% 25 to 44, 22.1% 45 to 64, and 19.1% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 85.2 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 78.0 men.
The median income for a household in the 18,105 USD , and the median income for a family 23,214 USD. Males had a median income of $ 24,722 versus $ 17,885 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,165. 36.9% of the population and 30.3% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 53.4% were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 32.6% were 65 or older.
