Burleson County Courthouse in Caldwell |
Caldwell is a city and county seat in Burleson County in the US state of Texas in the United States . The Reeves-Womack House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994 .

The city is located in the middle southeast of Texas, almost centrally in Burleson County at the intersection of Texas State Routes 21 and 36 and has a total area of 8.8 km² without any significant water surface. Caldwell's geographic coordinates are 30 ° 32 ' N , 96 ° 42' W (30.528580, −96.700350).
history
Until the formation of Burleson County in 1846, the city was the seat of the county government of Milam County . In 1856 the town had a population of 300 and the Caldwell House , known as one of the best hotels in Texas, was a popular meeting place for travelers heading west on Old San Antonio Road . At that time, Caldwell had seven general stores, two churches, a post office, a blacksmith and hardware store, and two private schools, separate for boys and girls, and a red brick county courthouse.
In 1878 the first local newspaper, the Caldwell Register, was published and in 1880 the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway moved its tracks through Caldwell and built a supply depot for the railroad. In 1912, the Houston and Texas Central , now the Southern Pacific Railroad , added a second railway line connecting Caldwell with Hearne in Robertson County and Flatonia in Fayette County .
In 1886 the Caldwell Volunteer Fire Department was established and in 1891 Caldwell was incorporated as a city. From 1898 to 1940 the headquarters of the Texas National Guard , Company E of the state police, was located here , which then became part of the 36th Infantry Division, which otherwise only consisted of volunteers from the area, and was deployed in Salerno , Italy in 1943 .
From 1940 to 1970 the population decreased noticeably. Mainly due to the decline in oil production . In 1990 there were 3181 inhabitants again and in 2000 there were 3449 inhabitants.

According to the census in 2000 , 3449 people in 1,322 households and 938 families lived here. The population density was 394.0 inhabitants per km². The racial the population was composed of 71.24% White, 12.64% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, and 13.71% other ethnic groups. About 2.15% were mixed race and 22.96% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 1,322 households, 36.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 52.5% of them were married couples living together. 14.1% were single mothers and 29.0% were non-families. 26.3% of all households were single households and there were people living in 15.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 3.16.
28.8% of the population were under 18 years old, 9.5% 18 to 24, 26.7% 25 to 44, 20.5% 45 to 64, and 14.5% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 87.0 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 83.2 men.
The median income for a household in the 29,936 USD , and the median income for a family 37,658 USD. Males had a median income of $ 25,745 versus $ 20,306 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,141. 17.9% of the population and 14.2% of families are below the poverty line . Of these, 21.0% were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 12.2% were 65 or older.
