Hearne is a city in Robertson County in the US state of Texas in the United States .
geography
The city is located in east Texas on US Highways 79 and 190 in the southwest of the county and has a total area of 10.6 km 2 with no significant water surface.
history
Around 1840 a Code Brown built a tavern on the site of the present city, which served as a stagecoach stop for travelers between Houston and Port Sullivan . At the same time, the tavern served as a general store and post office. The place was named after Christopher C. Hearne , a cotton plantation owner in the area.

According to the 2000 census, 4,690 people in 1,710 households and 1,190 families lived here. The population density was 441.7 people per km 2 . The racial the population was composed of 38.12% White, 44.41% African American, 0.49% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, and 14.48% other ethnic groups. About 2.28% were mixed race and 28.10% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 1,710 households, 36.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 39.2% of them were married couples living together. 25.6% were single mothers and 30.4% were non-families. 27.8% of all households were single households and there were people living in 15.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.70 and the average family size was 3.31 people.
32.9% of the population were under 18 years old, 9.1% 18 to 24, 24.3% 25 to 44, 18.7% 45 to 64, and 15.1% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 84.4 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 77.8 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 19,556 , and the median income for a family is $ 25,538 . Males had a median income of $ 24,013 versus $ 19,306 for females. The per capita income was $ 9,716. 31.2% of the population and 29.2% of families are below the poverty line. 45.2% of these were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 25.8% were 65 or older.
