Harker Heights is a city in Bell County in the US state of Texas in the United States .
geography
The city is located a little southeast of the geographic center of Texas on US Highway 190 in the west of the county and has a total area of 33.0 km² without any significant water surface.
history
The place was named after Harley Kern , one of the two landowners who made the land available for the place.

According to the 2000 census, 17,308 people lived here in 6,200 households and 4,712 families. The population density was 523.7 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 70.89% White, 14.94% African American, 0.78% Native American, 3.58% Asian, 0.40% Pacific islander, and 5.79% other ethnic groups. About 3.62% were of mixed race and 12.44% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 6,200 households, 42.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 61.4% of these were married couples living together. 11.2% were single mothers and 24.0% were non-families. 18.0% of all households were single households and there were people living in 3.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.77 and the average family size was 3.13.
30.4% of the population were under 18 years old, 10.5% 18 to 24, 34.8% 25 to 44, 18.0% 45 to 64, and 6.2% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 101.0 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 99.0 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 42,947 , and the median income for a family is $ 49,607. Males had a median income of $ 31,728 versus $ 26,404 for females. The per capita income was $ 20,061. 10.0% of the population and 7.4% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 12.2% were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 4.9% were 65 or older.
