Belton is a city in Bell County in the US state of Texas in the United States and the seat of the county seat of Bell County.
geography
The city is located just east of the geographic center of Texas on Nolan Creek and the intersection of Interstate 35 and US Highway 190 . Belton has a total area of 34.1 km², of which 1.7 km² is water. The distance to Austin in the southwest is about 85 km, to Dallas in the northeast about 200 km and to the Gulf of Mexico in the southeast about 600 km.
history
The area was first settled around 1840. The first settlers were German and Irish immigrants. Belton was first founded in 1850 as Nolanville, named after Philip Nolan , then elected as the county seat and renamed Belton. Over the next ten years, the district court building was built, as well as several shops, a store, a church, several saloons and other businesses. The courthouse, which is still in use today, was built in 1886. More than 1,000 men from Belton and Bell Counties served in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War .

According to the 2000 census, 14,623 people lived here in 4,742 households and 3,319 families. The population density was 452.4 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population is composed of 72.67% White, 8.10% African American, 0.64% Native American, 0.95% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander residents and 14.83% non-residents ethnic groups. Approximately 2.71% are of two or more races and 25.13% of the population are Spanish or Latin American.
Of the 4,742 households, 37.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 49.9% of these were married couples living together. 16.1% were single mothers and 30.0% were non-families. 24.6% of all households were single households and there were people living in 10.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.69 and the average family size was 3.23.
26.9% of the population were under 18 years old, 18.4% 18 to 24, 26.5% 25 to 44, 17.1% 45 to 64, and 11.1% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 28 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 95.0 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 90.4 men.
The median income for a household in the 32,052 USD , and the median income for a family 38,635 USD. Males had a median income of $ 31,304 versus females of $ 20,678. The per capita income was $ 14,345. 17.9% of the population and 12.7% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 20.7% were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 14.0% were 65 or older.
