Burnet ( pronunciation : [ ˈbɜrnɪt ]) is the seat of the county government of Burnet County in the US state of Texas in the United States .

geography

The city is located a little southeast of the geographic center of Texas and almost centrally in the county , 75 km northwest of Austin and has a total area of ​​17.7 km² without any significant water surface.

history

The first people to immigrate from Europe settled here as early as 1849. The city was founded in 1852 under the name Hamilton , after John Hamilton , one of the first settlers in this place. In the same year, Burnet County was formed and the first district courthouse was built, the Burnet Courthouse , which also opened the first post office.

In 1857 35 people lived in the place and in 1858 Hamilton was renamed Burnet. The next notable population boom did not take place until 1882, when the place was connected to the Austin and Northwestern Railroad . Burnet then developed into the trading center of this area. The town received its town charter in 1933.

According to the census in 2000 , 4735 people in 1661 households and 1114 families lived here. The population density was 267.7 inhabitants per km ².
