South Los Angeles ("South Los Angeles", formerly South Central Los Angeles , occasionally just South LA ) is a district of the Californian metropolis of Los Angeles .

The district is bounded to the north by the Santa Monica Freeway , to the west by La Brea Avenue and to the south by the Century Freeway .

In 2003 the city of Los Angeles changed its name from South Central Los Angeles to South Los Angeles. The aim was to get rid of the reputation for violence, as South Central was synonymous with crime and violence. Colloquially, however, the district is still mostly known as South Central, and newspapers such as the Los Angeles Times usually use both names. The new name is also geographically misleading, as other districts such as LA Harbor / San Pedro are even further south.

South Los Angeles is often considered one of the most dangerous boroughs in Los Angeles. The neighborhood was the main site of the 1992 riots in Los Angeles . The district is also known for its gang crime and was the founding site of various nationally known street gangs, such as the Bloods and Crips , the 18th Street Gang , the Florencia 13 , the 38th Street Gang , or the Mara Salvatrucha . There are also clashes between Afro-Americans and Latinos .

South (Central) Los Angeles and the adjacent communities are considered one of the birthplaces of West Coast hip-hop and are known for music and media well beyond the city limits of Los Angeles. Rappers and rap groups such as NWA or Ice Cube address life on the streets of South Central Los Angeles in many of their songs.

In culture

South Central became internationally known, among other things, for feature films that deal with the subject of "social hot spots". Examples to be mentioned here are Colors (1988), Boyz n the Hood (1991), South Central (1992), Menace II Society (1993), John Singletons Baby Boy (2001), Training Day (2001), The Garden (2008) and End of Watch (2012).

Attractions in South Los Angeles include the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum , the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County , the California African American Museum , the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena , the California Science Center , the Shrine Auditorium, and the Watts Towers .
