Baldwin Hills is a district (Neighborhood) of Los Angeles in Los Angeles County in California (USA). It is located in a hilly area above Los Angeles in the center of the zip code area (ZIP code) 90008 and is bordered by the cities of Inglewood in the south, Culver City in the west and northwest, and others in the east. According to the US Census Bureau, Baldwin Hills has a share of approximately 78.5% African American population. The district is one of the most affluent residential areas in the US with an African American majority, which is why the area is also called " Black Beverly Hills ".

history

Baldwin Hills got its name from the horse breeder and businessman Elias J. "Lucky" Baldwin , the founder of the Santa Anita Park racecourse in Arcadia , east of Los Angeles. In Baldwin Hills was the occasion of the 1932 Olympic Games for the first time in the history of the Olympic Games an Olympic Village built. This was reserved exclusively for the male participants in the games. 1942 in Baldwin Hills between Rodeo Road and Coliseum Street , the settlement Village Green in the style of the garden city movement built. The settlement, consisting of 627 residential units, also included extensive green spaces and office buildings. Today the entire complex is a listed building .

For a long time, oil was drilled in the hills that characterize the southern part of the district . After the oil companies left the area, the site was taken over by public institutions. There is a lack of public parks. Part of the site has been converted into the Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area . The Baldwin Hills Reservoir , which broke on December 14, 1963 and caused a tidal wave that killed five to eight people, used to be in this area.
