action

The film begins with a chase followed by an exchange of fire in South Central Los Angeles . The two police officers involved, Officers Brian Taylor and Miguel Zavala, are close friends at the Los Angeles Police Department . Taylor, a former US Marine , films her daily life for a study project to the displeasure of his colleagues and superiors.

The area is embroiled in violent gang feuds between Mexican and African-American gangs, with police caught between the fronts. The two officers later work on a disturbance of the peace. Once there, they meet an African American named Tre. He insults the Mexican Zavala with racist remarks, whereupon the two agree to a fist fight. Zavala wins the fight and arrests Tre, but at the same time wins his respect because, as agreed, he does not mention this fight in his report. That same night, Tre and his friends are attacked by a group of Latinos, members of a gang ( Sureños ). A friend of Tre's is killed in the process. The next day the police officers are called to a burned-out vehicle. It is the vehicle that was driven during the drive-by shoot . Both are ordered away from the location by the homicide detectives who have arrived in the meantime . The two then take care of a call from a worried mother who misses her children. However, the children find her in the house of the drug addict mother, bound and gagged with tape. A few days later, the two of them follow a suspicion and observe a house in which the mother of the leader of a Latino gang lives. The two officers then follow a pickup truck that has visited the mother's house and stop it. During the inspection, the driver pulls a pistol and shoots Zavala, but misses him. The police are able to overwhelm the perpetrator and confiscate some ornate weapons and several bundles of money that they find in the driver's car.

A few days later, the two officers rescue three children from a burning house. You yourself are in mortal danger during the rescue operation. They receive praise and a Medal of Valor for their courage. Taylor convinces Zavala to find out more about the background of the arrested pickup driver. They drive to a house whose address Taylor learned from the pickup driver's cell phone. In the house they arrest a Mexican who is guarding a makeshift cell. Apparently there is a case of human trafficking . All of a sudden, heavily armed agents from the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) border control agency appear and take over the further investigations. An agent informs Taylor and Zavala that the house has been linked to the Mexican Sinaloa cartel and strongly advises them to keep their low profile or expect retaliation.

Zavala's wife Gabby gives birth to their first child. One night, the two of them received an “officer needs help” radio message from Sook, Van Hauser's partner who is on her probationary period. Immediately they go to the crime scene and find Van Hauser alive, but with a knife in his right eye. He points to the nearby alley where Sook is being brutally beaten. Taylor decides to arrest the perpetrator instead of shooting him. While the victims are being taken care of by the ambulance, they realize that Van Hauser will not be returning and that Sook will leave the police.

Taylor marries his fiancée Janet. At the wedding, "Sarge", the superior sergeant of Taylor and Zavala, told in a drunk state about his partner who had been killed and who had thrown himself into an approaching bullet to protect him. Zavala then explains to Taylor that he will take care of Janet if anything happens to Taylor. The next day, the two of them work through a routine case: a woman is worried about her elderly mother. After nobody opens the door for them, Zavala kicks in the door. They found drugs in the house, dismembered bodies and a message from the drug cartel.

The ICE is characterized in the meantime on a surveillance video in which a member of the drug cartel ordering the murder of two officers. The gang that carried out the drive-by shoot at the beginning is planning to kill the two police officers. Tre warns Taylor and Zavala there are rumors that the two are on the cartel's death list. However, neither of them pay any further heed to this warning.

Shortly after the wedding, Janet becomes pregnant. On another night the two officers chase a ruthless driver into a high-rise building. There they are expected to be ambushed by the heavily armed Latino gang (Sureños). Taylor is shot in the hand and his radio is destroyed. Both seek refuge in an apartment. Taylor sees no other option than to shoot his way out of the way. Both fight their way into an adjacent alley where they are shot at. Taylor is apparently fatally hit in the chest. At the moment when Zavala desperately helps his partner, the gang members come and shoot Zavala from behind. Finally, the requested reinforcement arrives at the crime scene and kills the gang members because they refused to surrender.

At the funeral it becomes apparent that Taylor survived because Zavala used his body to protect him from the gangsters' volleys . Taylor finds it difficult to give a funeral speech because the loss of his partner is too painful. So he just says the words: "He was my brother."

Finally, a scene is shown that was recorded on the day of Zavala's murder. Zavala relates how he involuntarily listened to Gabby's parents having sex while he was lying under their bed. The two policemen laugh heartily and receive a radio message and set out to "catch criminals".
