William Kettner

William "Bill" Kettner (born November 20, 1864 in Ann Arbor , Michigan , †  November 11, 1930 in San Diego , California ) was an American politician . Between 1913 and 1921 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1873, William Kettner moved with his parents to Saint Paul , Minnesota , where he attended public schools. In 1884 he moved to California, where he worked in the cities of Julian , Santa Ana and Visalia in the mining, hotel, newspaper and insurance industries. In 1888 he joined the California National Guard . At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1900 he was a member of the Visalia parish council. From 1907, Kettner lived in San Diego, where he worked in the insurance, banking, and real estate markets. He was also a member and intermittent president of the San Diego Chamber of Commerce.

In the 1912 congressional elections , Kettner was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the then newly established eleventh constituency of California , where he took up his new mandate on March 4, 1913. After three re-elections, he was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1921 . Kettner campaigned in Congress for the construction of naval bases in San Diego. World War I fell during his time in Congress . In addition, the 16th , 17th , 18th and 19th amendments to the Constitution were ratified between 1913 and 1920 . In 1916 and 1924 he was a delegate to the respective Democratic National Conventions .

In 1920, William Kettner renounced another candidacy. After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, he was active again in the insurance industry and in the real estate business. He died in San Diego on November 11, 1930. In 1919 San Diego's first fireboat Bill Kettner was christened in honor . The world's first gasoline-powered fireboat was in service until 1961. In 1930 Arctic Street in San Diego was renamed Kettner Boulevard in honor.
