Christof von Kalle (born March 6, 1962 in Hellersen ) is a German oncologist , university professor and head of the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) in Heidelberg .

Career

Von Kalle studied medicine at the University of Cologne from 1981 to 1987 . He completed his internship at Albert Einstein Medical School , Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Cornell University Medical College . From 1988 to 1989 he was a PhD student with Volker Diehl in Cologne . In 1991, with his dissertation on the cross-sectional examination of microangiopathy-associated parameters in type I diabetic children, he was awarded a Dr. med. PhD . From 1990 to 1992 von Kalle worked at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg. He was a Research Associate at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC) in Seattle from 1992 to 1994 . From 1994 to 1995 he was a post-doctoral student with Volker Diehl in Cologne. In 1996 von Kalle moved to the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg , where he worked as a doctor in Department I, and then as a group leader and Roland Mertelsmann , later with Christoph Peters . In 2003, Kalle completed his habilitation in Freiburg . In 2004 he received a C3 professorship at the University of Freiburg and worked in the field of applied stem cell biology and gene therapy . In 2005 he left Freiburg and went to Heidelberg. Since July 1, 2005, von Kalle has been managing director of the NCT and spokesman for the board of directors together with Dirk Jäger . Both are successors to Volker Diehl, who has been acting head of the center since January 1, 2004. In addition, von Kalle heads the Translational Oncology department as Director. At the DKFZ he heads the Translational Oncology department.

Von Kalle is married and has two sons.

Honors

In 2003 von Kalle received the Young Investigator Award from the American Society of Gene Therapy, in 2005 the Langen Science Award from the Paul Ehrlich Institute and in 2011 the Eva Luise Köhler Research Award for Rare Diseases.
