The Paul Ehrlich Institute ( PEI ) in Langen is the German federal institute for vaccines and biomedical drugs . On July 23, 2009, the new authority name replaced the old name of the Federal Office for Sera and Vaccines . It is a higher federal authority within the portfolio of the Federal Ministry of Health . It was named after its first director, the German physician and Nobel Prize winner Paul Ehrlich . On July 7, 1972, with the law establishing a Federal Office for Sera and Vaccines, it became an independent higher federal authority.
tasks
The Paul Ehrlich Institute is responsible for the approval and state batch release of medical technology devices , vaccines and biomedical drugs and makes a significant contribution to the safety of these drugs. Since August 2004 (12th amendment to the Medicines Act ), the institute has also been responsible for approving clinical studies for the medicinal products it supervises.
Medicines that are evaluated by the Paul Ehrlich Institute include
- Vaccines and sera for humans and animals,
- Allergen preparations ,
- monoclonal antibodies ,
- Medicines made from blood,
- Advanced Therapy Medicines (somatic cell therapeutics, gene therapeutics, tissue engineering products) and
- Tissue preparations.
An important task of the Paul Ehrlich Institute is not only approval but also scientific advice. Research is also one of the institute's central tasks.
In July 2005 the World Health Organization named the institute a WHO collaborating center for the quality assurance of blood products and in-vitro diagnostics . In August 2013 the Paul Ehrlich Institute became WHO collaborating center for the standardization and evaluation of vaccines.
