Friedrich Karl Dietrich Falke (born August 13, 1927 in Coswig (Anhalt) ) is a specialist in medical microbiology and infectious diseases. From 1969 to 1992 he was Professor of Medical Microbiology in Mainz with the main tasks of research , teaching and diagnostics and is an author of specialist medical literature on microbiology , virology and infectious diseases .

Life

Dietrich Falke grew up in Coswig, the son of the general practitioner Friedrich Falke and his wife Gertrud Eleonore Falke. During the Second World War , at the age of 15, he was an air force helper from February 1943 to September 1944 , then in the Reich Labor Service until December 1944 . Falke was drafted on December 14, 1944, was taken prisoner by the English and fled to the Soviet zone of occupation in March 1946 . On July 15, 1946, he passed the Abitur at the Goethe School in Dessau . He worked in agriculture until 1947. From January to April 1948 he was an auxiliary nurse at the district hospital in Osterburg (Altmark) and from May to December 1948 volunteer at the "Bacteriological Investigation Center" in Husum . He then worked until April 1949 as a laboratory assistant in what was then the Husum district hospital and developed a photometer for clinical-chemical examinations.

From 1949 to 1954 Falke studied medicine in Kiel and Tübingen and in the first three semesters also chemistry, passed the medical state examination and received his doctorate with the dissertation : "The blood count in guinea pigs infected with Queensland fever ". The topic was awarded by Wolf-Dietrich Germer. From April 1, 1955 to August 31, 1957 he worked under Erich Traub as a research assistant at the Federal Research Center for Virus Diseases of Animals in Tübingen, then until March 31, 1965 as a research assistant to R. Siegert at the Hygiene Institute of the Philipps University in Marburg , where he was in February 1964 on "the proliferation of herpes viruses in cultured cells" in the subject Medical Microbiology habilitation .

During his time in Marburg, he married Inge Schmidt-Westerkamp on July 16, 1960. During a one-year study visit to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda , Maryland , USA , he worked in 1960/61 .

In 1965 he switched to the Institute of Medical Microbiology at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz as a virologist , where he took on an unscheduled professorship from 1969 and a C3 professorship from 1972 as head of the newly established department for experimental virology. He headed the department for experimental virology beyond his retirement in August 1992 until 1995. From 1975 to 1985 he also held a teaching position for virology at the TU Darmstadt .

Dietrich Falke is the author of specialist medical literature on microbiology, virology and infectious diseases, the new editions of which he regularly updates as emeritus.
