Nikolai Valeryevich Bolshakov ( Russian: Николай Валерьевич Большаков ; born  May 11, 1977 in Chernogorsk , Khakassia ) is a former Russian cross-country skier .

Career

Bolshakov first appeared internationally in February 1997 at the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in Canmore . There he won the silver medal over 10 km classic and with the relay. He ran his first World Cup race in January 1998 in Kavgolovo and finished 40th in the 30 km freestyle. At the beginning of the 1999/2000 season he got his first World Cup points in Sappada with 12th place over 15 km freestyle. In the further course of the season he came in tenth place over 10 km freestyle in Ulrichen for the first time among the top ten in the World Cup. He finished the season in 45th place in the overall World Cup. This was his best overall placement in the World Cup. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2001 in Lahti , he finished 35th in the sprint and 29th in the 20 km pursuit race. At the beginning of the 2001/02 season he reached in Kuopio with third place in the relay, his first podium in the World Cup. At the World Cup in Davos , he came back on the podium with second place in the relay. In the individual he achieved his best individual result in the World Cup with fifth place in the 15 km freestyle in Brusson . At the season highlight, the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City , he took seventh place in the 30 km mass start race and sixth place in the relay. In the following season he reached six individual World Cup appearances, twice in the top ten. The fifth place over 10 km freestyle in Kiruna was his best result. In the following years he only took part in a few World Cups. He had his greatest success at the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2005 in Oberstdorf . There he won bronze with the relay. He also finished 12th in the 15 km freestyle. He ran his last international race in November 2007 at the Eastern Europe Cup in Vershina Tjoi and achieved 38th place over 10 km freestyle and 32nd place over 10 km classic.

Bolshakov took part in 44 World Cup individual races and came 18 times in the points and five times in the top ten.
