Parish before the merger on December 31, 2008

Ulrichen ( Valaisian German : Üerliche [ˈyərlɪχə] ) is a village in the Valais municipality of Obergoms and a parish in the deanery of Ernen .

Geography, place name and dialect

From Ulrichen it goes through the Äginatal up to the Nufenenpass in the canton of Ticino . An old mule track goes past the Griessee over the Griespass to Italy .

The locals pronounce the place name as extraneous . The -ingen name, first mentioned in 1235 in the spelling Vlrighingen , goes back to an Alemannic clan elder named Uodalrīch (not from St. Ulrich) and means "with the people, with the clan of Uodalrich". The Latinized form Ulringa is usually found in the parish registers .

As in many Valais dialects, in Ulrichen the ch is pronounced in Chind, for example, as a soft I- sound [ç] and not as a hard [χ] as is otherwise common in Swiss German.

history

In 1211 the battle of Ulrichen took place here .

The Ulrichen military airfield was operated until 1999 .

On November 25, 2007, a referendum approved a merger of the three previously independent Obergommer municipalities of Ulrichen, Obergesteln and Oberwald . The new municipality of Obergoms has existed since January 1st, 2009.
