Lax ( Valais German Laggsch [ ˈlɑkʃ ]) is a municipal municipality and a civic municipality with a civic council in the Goms district in the Swiss canton of Valais . It also forms a parish of the dean's office in Ernen .
geography
Lax is located in the Aletsch region at the entrance to Goms . The place Lax itself is located at 1048 m above sea level. M. The lowest point of Lax and the district of Goms lies in the valley floor on the Rhone at 980 m above sea level. M.
The municipal area of Lax, a narrow band that extends from the valley to the high mountains of the glacier area, lies exclusively on the right (northern) side of the Rhone, i.e. on a southern slope. Despite the altitude, Lax therefore has a mild climate and is considered a climatic health resort . Even the frost-sensitive walnut tree thrives in Lax - like nowhere else in Goms. To the east, the deep Gorpigraben and the Altbach form the border with the municipality of Fiesch .
history
Lax is first mentioned in a document in 1295 as Lacx . The name comes from Latin lăcǔ (s) «trough-like depression, hollow; See, Tümpel, Teich »and probably refers to the hollow below the village that was probably drained late. The oldest surviving documentary mention of Lax as a community of Zehndens Goms dates from 1308. The first community regulations date from 1436.
Like the whole of Valais, Goms is also relatively dry. The oldest document, in which the allocation of water for irrigation purposes is regulated, goes back to the year 1347. Today Lax operates an irrigation system from which seven farms can benefit.
Lax hit the headlines at the end of 2004 because a revolving hotel in the form of a 100 meter high tower was planned in the community. The construction, which should have opened in 2007, did not materialize.
