BLITZINGEN ( Walser German : Blitzige [blitsigə] ) is a location in the Valais Munizipalgemeinde Goms and a Parish of Dekanats Ernen . Until December 31, 2016, it formed its own municipality .

history

Blitzingen is first mentioned in a document in 1347. It is an -ingen -name which was formed from a personal name such as * Blitzo or something similar and would mean "among the people of Blitzingen".

In September 1932, a major fire destroyed large parts of the village, but it was rebuilt in the Valais style within a year.

On January 1, 2017, the previous municipality of Blitzingen merged with the municipalities of Grafschaft , Münster-Geschinen , Niederwald and Reckingen-Gluringen to form the new municipality of Goms. In addition to Blitzingen itself, the villages of Bodme , Wiler, Ammern and Gadmen, which were independent until 1848, belong to the former community .
