Reckingen ( Valais German [əˈrekχɪgə] or [ˈrekχɪgə] ) is a district of the municipality of Goms in the Goms district of the Swiss canton of Valais . It also forms a parish of the dean's office in Ernen .

history

Reckingen was first mentioned in 1225 as de Requinguen . The name is a -ingen -name, in which a personal name like * Ricco, * Recco is; it means "with the people, with the Ricco or Recco clan".

In 1838 several stone graves from the Hallstatt period were discovered. Thus Reckingen is the uppermost settlement of the Obergoms, where traces of prehistoric times can be traced back. Important Roman finds were also made here, so that a prehistoric and Roman settlement of the area can be assumed. The present-day settlement and its name go back to the Germanic wave of colonization of the Goms.

Only village statutes from the 16th century have survived. In the 18th century, Reckingen became the center of artists (organ builders, carvers and bell makers) of the Obergoms, which is certainly related to the church building that was taking place at the time.

The settlement has been hit by natural disasters several times. On February 5, 1749, an avalanche from the Bächital destroyed the new rectory. Another avalanche in the Bächital destroyed the newer houses on the eastern flank of the western fall fan on February 24, 1970, and on the same day an avalanche broke off in the erosion funnel east of the village and destroyed the Antonius chapel. For this reason, an avalanche channel was created between 1970 and 1973 to keep the Bächtall avalanche away from the village.

The parish tried to separate from the parish of Münster in 1682 . However, this only succeeded in 1695/96. The separation from Munster was not easy, because the mother parish resisted, although the papal nuncio Marcellus de Aste had already drawn up the act of foundation of the curate chaplain on April 16, 1695. Because of the refusal of Münster and Bishop Adrian V. von Riedmatten, Johann Joseph Hürsimann had to be sent to Reckingen as apostolic commissioner so that the church could be assigned and the first curate chaplain appointed. The church received the baptismal and burial rights and the right to appoint the curate chaplain was transferred to Reckingen. But one was still subordinate to the mother parish of Munster. They did not finally part with Münster until 1914; before that, in 1880, Primezen had been bought out of the church factory in Münster.

On February 24, 1970, an avalanche killed 30 people.

On January 1st, 2004 the previously independent municipalities of Reckingen and Gluringen merged to form the municipality of Reckingen-Gluringen . On January 1, 2017, this merged with the communities of Blitzingen , Grafschaft , Münster-Geschinen and Niederwald to form the new municipal community of Goms .

Townscape

Reckingen is the only village in Goms that stretches across the entire valley floor and thus divides into three loosely connected settlement areas. The upper village on the slope north of the main road, the Niderdorf in the valley basin on the right bank and the Uberrotte (Überrotte) on the left bank of the Rotten.

building

Some old wooden houses and farm buildings have been preserved in the community, including four so-called "Heidehischer" (Heidenhüs, a late medieval type of building characteristic of Obergoms).

The Parish Church of the Nativity of Mary . The current church was built between 1743 and 1745. It stands on the site of a chapel first mentioned in 1414, which was replaced by the first parish church in 1695, but which turned out to be too small.

The Kreuzkapelle stands on the Stalen, a plateau at the entrance to the Blinnental . The current chapel was built in 1769 and is believed to be the first on this site.
