The main road 19 is a Swiss main road .

This inner-alpine road connects the Rhone Valley with the Rhine Valley and runs along the Glacier Express route between Brig in the canton of Valais and Reichenau-Tamins in the canton of Graubünden .

The street begins in Brig at Hauptstrasse 9 . It runs through the Rottental ( Goms ) over Fiesch and Gletsch . In Gletsch the road crosses with the main road 6 , which leads over the Grimsel Pass . From Gletsch, the road leads up the Furka Pass , whose apex is 2,429  m above sea level. M. is the highest point on the road. After the descent, Andermatt is reached in the Urserental . From there the ascent to the second pass, the Oberalppass ( 2044  m above sea level ) begins . The road then leads along the Surselva , via Disentis / Mustér , Ilanz and the bypass near Flims, which opened in 2007, to Tamins and Reichenau , where the road crosses the Alpine Rhine on the Tamins Rhine bridge and joins the Autobahn 13 and Hauptstrasse 13 . Chur is reached in 10 km on this road .

The total length of this predominantly alpine road is around 163 kilometers.

Restrictions

Vehicles weighing more than 18 tons have to make a relatively long detour via Vevey , Bern and Zurich or via Italy ( Domodossola , Bellinzona and San Bernardino ), as the Furka Pass and the Oberalp Pass have restrictions in this regard. In addition, the Furkapass is subject to a trailer ban. An alternative is rail loading through the Lötschberg (max. Height 3.55 m) or rail transport. Rail loading on the Furka is possible up to 20 t and a maximum height of 3.62 m.
