course
The E 43 is one of the most important road connections across the Alps .
In the north it connects to the E 45 , which connects Sweden and Denmark with Germany . In the south, the E 43 merges into the E 35 , which leads to central Italy .
In Germany , the E 43 uses the A 7 and A 96 .
In Austria , it leads over the A 14 and the L 202 and some streets in the city of Bregenz.
In Switzerland , the route runs along the entire A13 .
The highest point is in the 6.6 km long San Bernardino tunnel .
Route expansion
In Germany and Austria, the route is mainly four-lane, occasionally also six-lane, expanded.
Between Switzerland and Austria, the E 43 runs together with the E 60 through Bregenz and overland to St. Margrethen , this section should have been bypassed by the planned S18 expressway . The realization of this route is uncertain.
In Switzerland, the route is four-lane to the Reichenau junction, and from there until shortly before the end it is mostly two-lane. However, there are a few exceptions here too, on which the road has three to four lanes.
