The Autoroute A 42 (abbreviation: A 42 ) is a French motorway that connects Lyon with Pont-d'Ain via Villeurbanne . Its entire length forms the European route E 611 and, as an extension of the A 40 and A 39, it is part of an eastern motorway connection to Dijon that runs parallel to the A 6 via Bourg-en-Bresse and Dole . Their total length is 54 km.

The motorway is particularly important as a section of the direct connection from Lyon to Geneva and Strasbourg .

The Route A 42 into predominantly north-east of Villeurbanne about Montluel and Ambérieu-en-Bugey until after Druillat where they in of Macon about Geneva to the Mont Blanc tunnel extending Route of titanium / Route Blanche passes (A 40) . It is free of charge from the start of the north or south bypass ( Périphérique Nord or Sud ) from Lyon near Villeurbanne to the toll station (French: péage ) near Beynost . There it meets the north-south A 432 La Boisse (A 46) - Saint-Laurent-de-Mure (A 43), intended as an extension of the Rocade Est .

After Vaulx-en-Velin , near Bois des Ormes, the A 42 crosses the east bypass ( Rocade Est ) from Lyon, which at the southern junction is the toll-free national road 346 in the direction of Grenoble (A 43) and Marseille (A 7), and at the north Turn off as the toll road A 46 in the direction of Paris (A 6).

In Druillat, the A 42 in the main direction of travel, contrary to the numbering suggests, merges directly with the A 40. The same applies to the A 40 in the opposite direction, which becomes the A 42 there ( TOTSO ).
