The Autoroute A 585 was a planned French motorway to connect the cities of Saint-Auban and Digne-les-Bains . It should branch off from the Autobahn 51 at Saint-Auban and run for a length of 20 km to Digne-les-Bains. The realization of the project was planned as part of a concession. Planning dates back to the 1990s, but the project was abandoned in 2010 due to difficulties in assessing the impact on the environment and unclear funding.

Planning history

On April 1, 1992, the motorway project was included in the planned network of national roads. On January 16, 1995, the preliminary planning was approved. On September 17, 1996, the realization of the A585 was declared an important project for the public. From November 1996 to June 1999 a lawsuit annulling the declaration was dismissed. In 2001 the possible variants of the route were examined. In addition, on July 9, 2001, the project was confirmed by the Interministerial Committee for Spatial Planning and a new public survey was decided. On September 14, 2001, the declaration of public benefit was extended for a period of 10 years. The project was confirmed by the Interministerial Committee for Planning and Development Planning on December 18, 2003. The concession agreement was expected to be signed in spring 2005. The construction costs were estimated at 227 million euros. However, the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region should financially support the project after the state withdrew, which was rejected in June 2005. In December 2005, the regional council of the region was ready to assume part of the construction costs amounting to 70 million euros. On December 27, 2006 the share was increased to 140 million euros. In addition, the planning should not be stopped and the use of the motorway should remain toll-free. On July 9th, 2010 it was decided that an extension of the national road 85 should be realized instead of the motorway project.
