history

The company was founded in 1961 as Société de l'Autoroute Paris-Lyon (company for the Paris-Lyon motorway; SAPL) by the French state for the further development of the A6 autoroute . The motorway was intended to connect the two major cities of Paris and Lyon and was completed in 1971. Connections to the cities of Dijon and Beaune followed by the APRR .

In 1975 the company name was changed to Société des Autoroutes Paris Rhin Rhône (SAPRR). This was followed by the construction of the A36 and A31 autoroute . In 1977 the SAPRR operated about 500 kilometers of roads. Further motorway projects followed in the 1980s, and in 1987 the SAPRR operated more than 1000 kilometers of roads for the first time. The company was also involved in the reconstruction of the Maurice-Lemaire tunnel in the Vosges .

The company acquired AREA in 1994. As a result of the acquisition, the number of kilometers operated increased to around 1900; in 2003, 2205 kilometers were already in operation. Part of APRR was privatized in 2004 , but the state remained the largest shareholder until 2006. At the end of 2005 it was decided to sell the remaining state shares in the company. The sale went into effect on February 20, 2006, and the Eiffarie Consortium has been the main owner of APRR ever since.
