history

Remains of a Gallo-Roman villa, as well as Roman bricks and inscriptions were found on the parish grounds in the area of the medieval church . In the 13th century, Beynost, whose church building is mentioned for the first time in 1183, belonged to the lands of the Lords of Montluel. During the first half of the 14th century the ownership changed several times, and Beynost came to the Dauphin of Viennois in 1317 , then under the French crown in 1343 and to the Counts of Savoy in 1355 . With the Treaty of Lyon , the region came to France in 1601. Until the French Revolution , the place belonged to the province of Bresse , then to the canton of Montluel and from 1982 to the newly separated canton Miribel .

Attractions

The original parish church of Saint-Julien was built in the 12th century. Over the centuries it underwent a number of changes: the nave and apse were enlarged and four side chapels were added. After the church was decommissioned in 1908 and all its furniture was transferred to a new building, the community used the building as a ballroom from 1911 to 1989. The new Beynost church, a few hundred meters away, is also dedicated to Saint Julien.
