history

A bronze key was found in the area of Montagnat from Gallo-Roman times. In the High Middle Ages , the village was first mentioned in 1013 under the name Villa Muntaniacus . Its spelling changed via Montannyes (1250), Montaignia (1256), Montagnia (1436) and Montegnia (1492) to Montagniat (1563). Montagnat originally belonged to the lands of the Lords of Coligny and came under the sovereignty of the Counts of Savoy in 1289 , until the entire Bresse fell to France with the Treaty of Lyon in 1601. The seat of the feudal men of Montagnat was in Rivoire, which was first mentioned in 1231 as Ville de Revoria and whose castle dates back to 1201. Their rule included the neighboring Revonnas for a time.

For several centuries, the water power of the Reyssouze mills drove, the earliest documented is that of La Cra right next to the town center ( Molendinum de la Craz situm apud Montaigniacum , 1467).

In the administrative structure after the French Revolution , Montagnat belonged to the then canton of Bourg-en-Bresse until 1973, then to a canton of Bourg-en-Bresse-3, from 1982 Bourg-en-Bresse-Est, from 1984 canton Péronnas and from 2015 to Canton of Ceyzériat .

With 1992 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Montagnat is one of the smaller communities in the Ain department. After the population had fluctuated only slightly around the 500 mark in the 19th century, it reached a low of 370 inhabitants in the first half of the 20th century. Since the 1960s there has been a sharp increase in population.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Montagnat was a predominantly agricultural village. In addition, there are now various local small businesses. In the meantime the village has also developed into a residential community. Many people in employment are commuters who work in the Bourg-en-Bresse area.

The village is not far from the D1075 departmental road and the former N75 national road that connected Bourg-en-Bresse with Grenoble. From here, as well as from the surrounding villages, side roads lead to Montagnat. South of the village is the next motorway connection to the A40 , which crosses the municipality in the east. The Mâcon – Ambérieu-en-Bugey railway line runs along the western edge of the municipality and has a larger train station in Bourg-en-Bresse. The airport in the region is Lyon-St-Exupéry (72 km away).

education

In Montagnat there is a state école primaire (elementary school with an integrated preschool ).

Parish partnership

Together with four other communities in Revermont, Montagnat has been running a community partnership with Ungureni in the Botoșani district in Romania since 2012 .
