Attignat bell tower rebuilt after the revolution

Attignat is a French municipality with 3211 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Ain in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

geography

location

Attignat is located at 223  m , about eleven kilometers northwest of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse and 25 kilometers east of the city of Mâcon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the historical province of Bresse in the valley of the Reyssouze . Neighboring communities of Attignat are Bresse Vallons with Cras-sur-Reyssouze in the north, Marboz in the northeast, Viriat and Polliat in the south and Saint-Martin-le-Châtel in the west.

topography

The area of the municipal area of 18.69 km 2 covers part of the southern Bresse, a plain between the Jura mountains and the Saône river , which is particularly characterized by agriculture . It is crossed by the Reyssouze from south to north in a wide valley that is between 10 and 20 m deep into the landscape. In the Attignat area, the river meanders through the valley floor and forms several ponds . In the east and west, there are smaller wooded areas through which the municipal boundary runs. Agricultural use makes up the majority of the land cover (meadows around 45%, fields 16%, other 14%) followed by built-up areas with 12% and forests with 11%.

Community structure

The main village Attignat on the west side of the Reyssouze is divided into the actual center and the districts Charmeil and Vacagnole south of it. On the east side is Crangeat. Each district is subdivided into further settlement areas with their own names, besides there are also individual hamlets and farms. In Jalamont in the northeast of the municipality, a few farms are now grouped around the remains of the medieval family seat. With the exception of a few former mills, the Reyssouze basin is hardly built on.

history

Small finds of Gallo-Roman bricks and utensils in the municipality indicate a settlement during Roman times. In the High Middle Ages , the parish in Attignat , which belongs to the diocese of Lyon, first appeared in 1184 as Prioratus de Antiniaco . Later names were Attiniacus (1250) and Attignia (1272, 1325). The area of Attignat belonged to the Lords of Bâgé in the Middle Ages and came into the possession of the Counts of Savoy as a dowry in 1272 . The current districts of Jalamonde ( Jalamondes 1355) and Crangeat ( Crangia 1335) were separate mansions with their own small castle in the Middle Ages. With the Treaty of Lyon , the entire Bresse became part of France in 1601.

From 1793 to 2015 Attignat belonged to the canton of Montrevel-en-Bresse . When the French cantons were reorganized nationwide in 2015, Attignat was the largest municipality in terms of population in the extended canton and therefore took on the role of capital instead of Montrevel-en-Bresse .

Attractions

The village church of Saint-Loup in Attignat dates from the 15th century. Its bell tower had to be rebuilt after the French Revolution . The Château de Salvert in the center of Attignat was once the seat of rule and was also rebuilt after the French Revolution. Its gardens are inscribed as monument historique . Today it is owned by the municipality and houses the city library. The larger halls are rented out by the municipality for private events.
