geography

location

Sainte-Euphémie is located at 210  m , about 42 kilometers southwest of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse , 24 kilometers north of the city of Lyon and 37 kilometers south of the city of Mâcon (as the crow flies). The village is on the edge of the countryside and historical province of Dombes not far from the Saône in the southwest of the Ain department. Neighboring communities of Sainte-Euphémie are Frans in the north, Misérieux in the east, Reyrieux in the south and Saint-Didier-de-Formans and Jassans-Riottier (point of contact) in the west.

topography

The area of the 4.61 km 2 municipal area includes a section at the transition between the Saône valley and the plateau of the Dombes with a terrain that is characterized by the foothills of the plateau. In the area of Sainte-Euphémie, two streams have dug their way into the plateau: the Formans crosses the municipality from northeast to southwest and, together with the Morbier flowing in from the southeast, drains the municipal soil towards the Saône. The village stretches across the valley floor of the two streams and the slopes that adjoin them, some distance from the actual watercourses. In the south, a corner of the municipality extends to the edge of the terrain above the Saône, on which the highest elevation is reached at 261  m . The communal land is used intensively for agriculture (fields 38%, meadows 27%, other agricultural areas 12%). The remainder is accounted for by settlement areas (around 15%) and forests (8%).

  • Le Bady ( 203  m ) below the confluence of the Morbier and Formans
  • Le Bois ( 205  m ) on the south side of the Formans
  • Les Bruyères de Sainte-Euphémie ( 259  m ) in the south on the edge of the terrain above the Saône.

history

The discovery of a bronze knife as well as Roman coins and clay vessels indicate that the area of Sainte-Euphémie was settled early. The original name was Juviniacum (1170 and 1183), which means something like the estate of Jovinus. During this period in the High Middle Ages there was a church ( Ecclesia Sanctae Euphemiae de Juviniaco ) dedicated to Euphemia of Chalcedon , and the abbey on the Île Barbe had a priory here ( Prioratus Sanctae Euphemiae , 1217). From 1523 the chapter in Trévoux administered the parish. In 1325 at the latest, the patronage was transferred to the place name, the spelling changed further via Sainte Ofeyme (16th century) and Saint-Euphème (1662) to the current name.

In the 13th century, half of the lands of Sainte-Euphémie belonged to the Lords of Saint-Trivier , feudal men of the Lords of Beaujeu , and the Palatins de Riottiers , feudal men of the Thoire-Villars. Sainte-Euphémie was incorporated into the Dombes in 1560 when they were elevated to an independent principality. In 1762 the place and the entire principality finally became part of the Kingdom of France.
