topography

The 7.41 km 2 municipal area covers a section at the transition between the Saône valley and the Dombes plateau, with terrain characterized by gently sloping foothills of the plateau. The name-giving stream Formans crosses the municipality from northeast to southwest and drains the municipal soil towards the Saône. The village extends on a hill between the Formans and the Morbier , which flows in from the southeast. The communal land is used intensively for agriculture (fields 58%, meadows 14%, other agricultural areas 7%). The remainder is accounted for by settlement areas (around 12%) and forests (9%).

Community structure

In addition to the town center, which is divided into several parts, Misérieux also includes some separately located hamlet settlements and farms, including:

  • Cibeins ( 226  m ) on the northwest side of the Formans
  • La Torine ( 219  m ) in a side valley of the Morbier south of the village
  • Les Bruyères de Misérieux ( 259  m ) at the southern tip of the municipality and part of the cross-municipal settlement of Les Bruyères, which extends from Saint-Didier-de-Formans via Sainte-Euphémie, Misérieux to Toussieux.

history

The banks of the nearby Saone were already settled in Roman times; in the Misérieux area, individual finds of coins and bricks from this period have been made.

In the High Middle Ages , the place first appeared on the maps of the Lyonnais in 984, at which time it was already the site of a church ( Ecclesia de Misiriaco ) and later a parish church. Other spelling variants, initially latinized, were Miseriacus and Meyseriacus . From 1226 Misereu and finally Mizerieux are recorded. In 1801 the two variants Mizerieux and Misérieux appeared at the same time. In the Middle Ages, the place was initially part of the property of the Lords of Thoire-Villars, who sold it to the Lords of Beaujeu in 1402 together with other lands in the western part of the Dombes .

The municipality part of Cibein was also the seat of a small lordship in the Middle Ages, which was first mentioned in 1097, the early spellings were Sibens (1296) and Civins (1356). The rule came into the possession of the Archbishop of Lyon in 1228 , from whom it was first sold to the Lords of Beaujeu and later to a local family in the 14th century.

The two-aisled village church of Saint-Martin was built in the 16th century instead of a medieval predecessor, to which the documentary mention of 984 referred. The church building, inscribed as monument historique , received a new bell tower in 1823 and was renewed and expanded in 1865. The main nave is divided into four bays, three of which are connected to the side aisles via pointed arches , and is covered with ribbed vaults . The choir is separated from the rest of the building by a flying buttress and has a yoke and an apse with a five-eighth end . The facade on the west portal is neo-Gothic in style .

The built in 1718 Château de Cibeins replaced a medieval feast house after Cibeins had been elevated to the county. Since 1918 it has housed an agricultural school. The property includes the rectangular castle with two inner courtyards, a burial chapel and a castle garden with a pond. In addition, several farmsteads and farm buildings belong to the current school complex. Two other well-preserved courts from the 17th and 18th centuries in Misérieux are also inscribed as monument historique.
