Erika Schmied

Erika Schmied , b. Schmidt (born July 18, 1935 in Uelzen / Lower Saxony) is a German photographer and graphic artist .

Life

Erika Schmidt was born in Uelzen / Lower Saxony. After training as a photographer, she studied art and art history from 1957 to 1961 at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg . In 1961 she went to the Hoffmann und Campe publishing house with the task of redesigning the Merian monthly magazines and taking care of the graphics. From 1985 to 1993 she was an editor for art and culture there. Since the 1960s she has designed the catalogs of the Kestner Society in Hanover and since the 1990s the programs of the International Summer Academy for Fine Arts in Salzburg .

In 1966 Schmied married the art historian, exhibition organizer and writer Wieland Schmied (1929–2014) from Austria . They have two daughters together, namely Franziska (1968) and Barbara (1973). She lives in Vorchdorf / Upper Austria .

Photographic work

In addition to the overall design of a series of Merian monthly issues between 1961 and 1993, she designed her own photo exhibitions about Thomas Bernhard in Munich , Frankfurt , Salzburg , Madrid , Vienna , Hanover , Rouen and Paris . Her portrait photos of artists ( Giorgio De Chirico , Max Ernst , David Hockney , Friedensreich Hundertwasser and others) and writers (Thomas Bernhard, HC Artmann , Peter Kurzck and others) have appeared in many biographies and collective works.
