history

The first documentary mentions from the High Middle Ages can be found around the year 1000 ( in villa qui dicitur Curte Francione , in villa qui nuncupatur Corfrancione ). Later the spelling changes to Corfrançons (1250) and Confranczon (1325). The parish of Saint-Pierre in Confrançon belonged to the Archdiocese of Lyon in the Middle Ages , with the cathedral chapter of Saint-Vincent in Mâcon owning the collature . In contrast, the lands of the commune were divided among several local mansions, including the lords of Asnières-les-Bois , whose presence also dates back to the 10th century. They had a castle built in the 14th century, which changed hands several times in the Middle Ages up to the Loriol family, after whom it was given the current name Château de Loriol in 1743 .

From 1793 to 2015 Confrançon belonged to the canton of Montrevel-en-Bresse .

Attractions

The Château de Loriol in the west of the municipality is inscribed as a monument historique with its castle park and farm buildings. The former medieval castle and seat of the Lords of Asnières bears the name of the Loriol family who owned it in the 16th century. The current building is characterized by the restoration and alterations from 1860, which gave the castle a neo-Gothic look. The main building consists of three wings grouped around a rectangular courtyard with round towers protruding from the outer corners. The right wing is closed by a square tower that goes back to the medieval donjon .
