history

In the Middle Ages, in 1285, Guéreins was first mentioned as the site of a church ( Parrochia de Guirrens ). Over time, the spelling changed via Guierreins (1418), Guierrans (1498), Guerrins (1662) and Guereins (1850) to today's Guéreins. The parish church was assigned to the Archdiocese of Lyon , the collature was exercised by the Saint-Pierre Abbey in Lyon, which had a priory built in Guéreins before 1245.

In the Middle Ages, Guéreins was a market town in the lands of the Lords of Beaujeu around the town of Chalamont . They expanded their possessions in the 14th century and thereby created the principality of Dombes, which was under the suzerainty of the Bourbons for several centuries from 1406 . In 1596 Guéreins was given as a fiefdom to the lordship of La Bâtie, which had its seat in the Château de la Bâtie on the border between the present-day communities of Montceaux and Chaneins . It was not until 1762 that Guéreins came to France together with the rest of the Principality of Dombes.

In the administrative structure after the French Revolution , Guéreins was first assigned to the Arrondissement Trévoux and after its dissolution in 1926 to the Arrondissement Bourg-en-Bresse . At the constituency level, Guéreins belonged to the canton of Thoissey from 1801 to 2015 , since its abolition it has been assigned to the canton of Chatillon-sur-Chalaronne.

From 1897 to 1936, the Trévoux – Jassans regional tram ran through Guéreins as part of the Tramways de l'Ain and served one stop.

In the 19th century the population fluctuated between 422 and the high of 938 inhabitants, which was recorded in 1851. Then began a population decline that lasted until the middle of the 20th century. A significant increase in population has been recorded since the 1980s. The local residents of Guéreins are called Guerinois (es) in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Guéreins was a village dominated by agriculture , but due to the small area of the municipality, only a few businesses are still active today. There are also various local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also developed into a residential community whose employees go about their work as commuters in the larger towns in the area and especially in the neighboring department of the Rhône.

The village is on the D933 , which connects the villages on the eastern bank of the Saône across several departments, but is no longer important as a regional thoroughfare today. In the south of the municipality there are branches to Montceaux and via the Saône to Belleville. With 16,000 vehicles per day, this bridge connection is now an important connection for commuters. The next motorway connection to the A6 is 4 km away in Belleville. The nearest train station on the Paris – Marseille line is also located there . The airport in the region is Lyon-St-Exupéry (60 km).
