Saint-Etienne-sur-Chalaronne is a French commune with 1,555 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Ain in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne in the Bourg-en-Bresse arrondissement .

Saint-Étienne-sur-Chalaronne is located at 195  m , about 29 kilometers west-southwest of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse , 43 kilometers north of the city of Lyon and 17 kilometers south of the city of Mâcon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the countryside and historical province of Dombes on the banks of the Chalaronne , a tributary of the Saône . Neighboring municipalities of Saint-Étienne-sur-Chalaronne are Illiat in the north, L'Abergement-Clémenciat and Dompierre-sur-Chalaronne in the east, Baneins and Valeins in the south, Peyzieux-sur-Saône and Mogneneins in the west and Saint-Didier-sur- Chalaronne in the northwest.

The area of ​​the 20.99 km 2 municipal area includes a section on the lower reaches of the Chalaronne at a point where its valley deepens into the broad plains of the Saône. The valley deepening consists of a floor about one kilometer wide, which lies between 30 and 50 m below the surrounding hilly landscape. This landscape is part of the Bresse-Saône rift between the Jura and the north massif central and lies at the transition between the Dombes and the Bresse . Inflows from the hills to the right and left of the Chalaronne drain the municipality, including the Ruisseau du Bourg and the Glenne streams in the center of the village and the Merdelon below the center. On the western edge of the municipality, the canal Les Échudes , which was laid out in the Middle Ages, branches off from the Chalaronne at a weir , through which a number of mills and fields were driven down the valley in the past centuries. At Valeins on the southern edge of the municipality, its highest point is recorded at 261  m . The communal soil is mainly used for agriculture (46% through fields, 35% through meadows and 7% other). Forests still take up about 9% of the municipal area.

  • Le Moine ( 200  m ) and Collonge ( 230  m ) as southern extensions of the village center,
  • Graboz ( 230  m ) and Mont Popier ( 250  m ) in the southeast of the municipality.

history

In the Middle Ages around 1250, Saint-Étienne was first mentioned as the site of a church ( Ecclesia Sancti Stephani de Chalaronna ). A few hundred meters away in Beaumont, the seat of a small lordship existed on a moth from 1330 at the latest . This and the place Saint-Étienne-sur-Chalaronne belonged in the Middle Ages and in the Ancien Régime to the Castellanei Thoissey and were part of the principality of Dombes.

In the administrative structure after the French Revolution , Saint-Étienne-sur-Chalaronne belonged to the canton Thoissey, which was abolished in 2015, and to the Arrondissement Trévoux until 1926 . After its dissolution, the municipality was assigned to the Bourg-en-Bresse arrondissement .

Attractions

  • The Château de Beaumont lies on a promontory above the Chalaronne to the northwest of the town center . From 1330 to 1853 the castle, built on a high medieval motte and the seat of the fief of Saint-Étienne, stood here. The castle was demolished in the period 1853-1865 and replaced by the current building, and the stables were built on the plans of the former farm buildings. Remnants of a well powered by horse power as well as a blacksmith's workshop and a pigeon house have been preserved. The château is inscribed in its entirety as a monument historique .
  • The Château de Saint Martin rises opposite Beaumont on the slopes of the Chalaronne. It dates from 1818 and is surrounded by a small park.
  • The village church is an 18th century building and replaced a chapel that was swept away by a flood from the Chalaronne.
  • In the hamlet of Saint-Blaise there is a chapel from the mid-19th century.
  • There are several mills along the Chalaronne, which worked until the middle of the 20th century.

With 1,555 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Saint-Étienne-sur-Chalaronne is one of the smaller communities in the Ain department. In the 19th century the population rose from 1294 to the highest level of 1639 inhabitants, which was recorded in 1851. Thereafter, the population began to decline continuously, which lasted into the 1980s. Only in the last few decades has a strong population increase been recorded.

Economy and Infrastructure

Saint-Étienne-sur-Chalaronne is still a predominantly agricultural village today . Around two dozen farms are active, mainly in the fields of agriculture and livestock . In addition, there are now various local small businesses. In the meantime the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in roughly equal proportions in the Bourg-en-Bresse area and in the larger towns of the Rhône department.

The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne along the Chalaronne to Thoissey. There are further road connections with the neighboring villages of Baneins, Valeins and Mogneneins. The next motorway connection to the A6 is around 15 km away in Belleville . The LGV Sud-Est high-speed line crosses the municipality, while the nearest train station is in Belleville on the Paris – Marseille line . The airport in the region is Lyon-St-Exupéry (63 km).
