It belongs to the canton of Attignat (until 2015: canton of Montrevel-en-Bresse ) in the arrondissement of Bourg-en-Bresse and is a member of the Bassin de Bourg-en-Bresse municipal association .

Marsonnas is located about 18 kilometers northwest of Bourg-en-Bresse and about 18 kilometers east-northeast of the city of Mâcon . Marsonnas is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Béréziat in the north and north-west, Saint-Jean-sur-Reyssouze in the north, Jayat in the north-east, Montrevel-en-Bresse in the east, Saint-Didier-d'Aussiat in the south, and Saint-Sulpice in the south Southwest, Bâgé-Dommartin in the west and Boissey in the northwest.
