River sections
Upper course between the source and Évran
A seven-kilometer-long reservoir with around five million cubic meters of water retention was built here in the 1930s with the construction of the Rophemel dam near the city of Caulnes .
Canalised river between Évran and Lyvet
At Évran , the Rance reaches the Canal d'Ille-et-Rance , which creates a navigable connection between Rennes and Saint-Malo and leads past Dinan . In this section, the Rance is part of the canal as a canalised river and is therefore navigable. Today the canal is only used for tourism by sport boats and houseboats . Only seaworthy ships / boats can pass the Châtelier sea water lock , located about five kilometers north-east of Dinan, near Lyvet and continue to the estuary.
The mouth of the funnel between Lyvet and the Dinard tidal power station
The strong tide differences of 12 (with spring tides up to 16 meters) have created a deeply cut estuary. It is dammed up by a 750 m long barrage to form an estuary area measuring 22 square kilometers. A large lock chamber allows ships to pass through.
Usine marémotrice de la Rance
- → Main article: Rance tidal power station
The strong tidal differences at the mouth are used for the tidal power plant " Usine marémotrice de la Rance ". The power plant was completed in 1966. The first considerations go back to Gérard Boisnoer, who suggested a corresponding use in 1921.
The 24 turbines with a total output of 240 MW produce 600 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually and thus around 3% of Brittany's electricity needs.
