geography

location

Montceaux is located at 212  m , about 35 kilometers west-southwest of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse , 38 kilometers north of the city of Lyon and 23 kilometers south of the city of Mâcon (as the crow flies). The village extends not far from the Saône on the western edge of the Ain department in the countryside and historical province of Dombes . Neighboring municipalities of Montceaux are Peyzieux-sur-Saône in the north, Chaneins in the east, Francheleins in the south and Montmerle-sur-Saône and Guéreins in the west.

topography

The municipality is located in the Saône valley and in the Bresse-Saône canal , which the river flows through in a north-south direction. The area of the 10.03 km 2 municipality includes the two valley flanks of the Calonne , a small tributary to the Saône. On these valley flanks, the terrain rises from the Saône and forms a plateau into which the Calonne is about 30 m deep. On the plateau in the northeast, the community reaches its highest point at 245  m . In the west, the municipal boundary runs parallel to the Sâone about one kilometer from its bank. The plateaus in particular are used for agriculture, 44% as fields, 20% meadows and 22% other species. The rest is covered in equal parts by settlement areas and a strip of forest along the Calonne.

Community structure

In addition to the actual historic town center, which is located on the south side of the Calonne, Montceaux also includes several hamlet settlements and farms, including:

  • Le Charlet ( 224  m ) on a ledge above the Calonne and opposite the town center,
  • Saint-Maurice and the former manor house La Bâtie ( 230  m ) on the upper reaches of the Calonne also have a view over the valley,
  • Bétheneins ( 222  m ) south of the town center,
  • Le Reverdy ( 213  m ) east of the town center,
  • Les Rivaux ( 219  m ) in the southwest; this settlement merges seamlessly into the new development areas of Montmerle-sur-Saône.

history

Roman coins from the decades around the turn of the century have been found in the area of Montceaux. In the High Middle Ages in 943, Montceaux was first mentioned as the location of a church ( In villa Moncellis, cum aecclesia in honore beate Dei genitricis Marie et Sancti Andeoli ). The original dual patronage of the Holy Virgin and St. Andeolus was later replaced by Philip and James . Over time, the spelling changed via Munceals (1149), Moncelz (1250), Monceuz (1285), Moncez (1299-1369), Moncelx (1365) and Monceaux (1789) to today's Montceaux.

When the Lords of Beaujeu acquired the dominions of Chalamont and Montmerle in the 12th century , Montceaux also came into their possession and thus became part of the principality of Dombes, which changed from 1406 for several centuries under the suzerainty of the Bourbons . At the time, the lands of Montceaux were given as a fief to the lordship of La Bâtie, who first appeared in documents in 1365 as Bastita de Franchelleins . It was based in the Château de la Bâtie on what is now the municipal boundary with Chaneins. It was not until 1762 that Guéreins came to France together with the rest of the Principality of Dombes.

In the administrative structure after the French Revolution , Montceaux was initially assigned to the Arrondissement Trévoux and after its dissolution in 1926 to the Arrondissement Bourg-en-Bresse . At the cantonal level, it belonged to the canton of Thoissey from 1801 to 2015 , since its abolition it has been assigned to the canton of Chatillon-sur-Chalaronne.

Attractions

  • The Château de la Bâtie rises east of Montceaux on a protrusion above the Calonne. It was built at the end of the 13th or beginning of the 14th century as a massive fortress castle with 4 systems and 19 towers in the red brick construction typical of the Dombes. The current main building on the west side houses the oldest parts after the château was converted into a residence in the 16th and especially in the 18th century, when La Bâtie became a county (French: comté ). One of the wings was demolished in the 19th century. The complex also includes a castle chapel with a crypt from the Middle Ages, which temporarily replaced the village church in the 16th century and was also rebuilt in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Château de la Bâtie is a monument historique .
  • The village church of Saint-Jacques-et-Saint-Philippe is originally a Romanesque building that was renovated in the 16th century and again in 1845. Its nave has a single nave with a groin vault, the crossing is formed by two chapels attached to the side. The bell tower has an octagonal floor plan and houses an old clock mechanism.
