Andeolus (French: St.-Andéol, Andeux, Andeul ; * in the 2nd century in Smyrna ; † May 1, 208 in what was then Bergoïate, today's Bourg-Saint-Andéol ) was a Christian deacon and saint. He is mainly venerated in the Rhône Valley in France and is considered the 'Apostle des Vivarais '.

According to tradition, Polycarp of Smyrna sent him together with Benignus , Andochius and the deacon Thyrsus to Gaul , where he preached the Gospel on his own in Carpentras . He met Emperor Septimius Severus , who was about to translate to England, and had his head split with a wooden sword in Bergoïate on the Rhône . His body was thrown into the river, where the current washed it to the west bank, where it was laid in a sarcophagus by a pious woman named Tullia .

Bishop Germanus of Paris persuaded King Childebert I in 557 to have a chapel built under invocation of the martyr, which was subordinated to the Abbey of St. Vincenz (later: Saint-Germain-des-Prés ). As a result, this chapel was elevated to a parish church under the name of St. André-des-Acres , the first patron of which was St. Andeol is.

In 858, Bishop Bernouin von Viviers had Andeolus' sarcophagus opened in the former church of St. Polycarpe; thus began a new phase of veneration of the saint. In 1119 Pope Calixtus II had his remains transferred to the church of St-Andéol in Bourg-Saint-Andéol , where their veneration is attested for centuries. However , they were burned during the French Revolution , but the sarcophagus, which was partially redesigned in the 12th century, was preserved and is still considered to be miraculous by many believers today.

Several churches and places in France and northern Spain are named after Andeolus and the Lac de Saint-Andéol on the Aubrac plateau also bears his name; his holiday is May 1st.
