The Aubrac is a cultural landscape in the south-western Massif Central in France . It is a so-called Natura 2000 region. The Aubrac belongs to the three departments Cantal , Aveyron and Lozère - and the regions Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Occitania .

geography

The Aubrac is a high plateau of volcanic origin with an average height of approx. 1000  m , the highest point is the summit of Signal de Mailhebiau at 1469 m (location: 44 ° 34 ′  N , 3 ° 5 ′  E, coordinates: 44 ° 34 ′  N , 3 ° 5 ′  E ). The Aubrac is framed by the Truyère in the north and the Lot in the south.

landscape

The characteristic landscape of the Aubrac is a basaltic plateau in the northwest of the Lozère department, which is criss-crossed by rivers (including Bès , Rimeize ) and lakes (Lac de Salhens, Lac de Saint-Andéol, etc.). The main feature of this landscape is an almost treeless, slightly undulating plateau, which is reminiscent of a prairie and is rather untypical for France. The Aubrac is very sparsely populated; the land is used almost exclusively for raising cattle. The village of Aubrac and its hospice, founded in the 12th century, gave it its name. The pastures are very wide and are separated from each other with barbed wire fences . Parts of the landscape extend to the neighboring departments of Cantal in the north-west and Aveyron in the south-west.

Agriculture is hardly possible in the high and rather humid region; in contrast, livestock breeding plays an important role in agriculture. The region is known for its robust breed of domestic cattle, the Aubrac cattle . In addition, the Laguiole knives are made by numerous manufacturers .

tourism

One of the French Way of St. James, the Via Podiensis (from Le Puy-en-Velay to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port ), crosses the Aubrac; There are several Romanesque churches and hospices along the way . There are also regional hiking trails. The rather flat landscape is ideal for cross-country skiing in winter.

Since May 2018, the area has been recognized as the Regional Natural Park Parc naturel régional de l'Aubrac on the initiative of a local initiative on a broad municipal basis .
