Saint-Urcize ( Occitan Sent Rocise ) is a central French city and a municipality with 417 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the extreme south of the Cantal area in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . Located in the cultural landscape of the Aubrac , it borders the historic counties of Gévaudan and the Rouergue .
Location and climate
The place Saint-Urcize is just under 50 km (driving distance) south of Saint-Flour at an altitude of about 1150 m ; the departmental capital Aurillac is a good 90 km northwest. The climate is rather cool and rainy; Rain (approx. 890 mm / year) falls over the year.

The since the mid-19th century, continued population decline is mainly the result of by the mechanization of agriculture caused rural exodus .
economy
The cattle breeding ( Aubrac cattle ) plays the main role for the livelihood of the place and the community; Flour, vegetables and fruit are brought here from the valleys. The place is best known for the ski station Super Blaise , located approx. 4 km to the south-west .
Attractions
- The partially Romanesque church of Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Michel is an exceptional building from the High Middle Ages and the early modern period.
- The tower of a former castle (château) rises on the Rocher de la Vierge .
