The population decline in the 20th century is mainly due to the lack of jobs as a result of the mechanization of agriculture . Due to its proximity to the city of Saint-Flour, there has been a slight increase again in recent decades.
economy
The place Andelat used for centuries to exclusively agriculturally oriented and self-sustaining villages ( hameaux ) and individual farms in the environment as a craft, trade and service center. Since the middle of the 20th century tourism has played a not insignificant role for the economic life of the place in the form of the rental of holiday apartments ( gîtes ).
history
Little is known about the history of Andelat - John II made the place the seat of a Bailliage in 1360 , but the local magistrate decided against it. During the Hundred Years War (1337–1453), the Château du Sailhant fell into the hands of the English for several years. In the course of the Huguenot War (1562–1598), the place apparently got away without damage.
Attractions
- The parish church of Saint-Cirgues is first mentioned in the 12th century; the current building, however, dates from the 13th and 15th centuries. The apse is broken polygonally; The most striking component, however, is the wide-spread bell gable ( clocher mur ) rising above the choir arch , the exact age of which is unclear. The entrance portal is - as can often be seen in the region - on the south side. Some heads in the console frieze of the apse are noteworthy. The building, which was restored in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, has been recognized as a Monument historique since 1969 .
- A wayside cross from the 16th century with a simple figure of Our Lady ( Notre-Dame de la Pitié ) has been classified as a Monument historique since 1971 .
- outside
- The Château du Sailhant , standing on a triangular cliff near the hamlet of Sailhant , is one of the most imposing castles in Auvergne . It was built in the 13th century as a military outpost for the city of Saint-Flour and changed hands several times in the years that followed. Architecturally, the privately owned castle consists of a multi-storey donjon ; in the 15th or early 16th century a multi-tower residential wing ( corps de logis ) was placed in front of it as a kind of crossbar. The castle is still not recognized as a monument historique .
