history

No finds in the area of Ambérieux are known from Roman times , but the Ambariacum of that time was already of great importance during the Burgundian period . It is recorded as the place where the Burgundian king Gundobad issued title 42 of the Burgundy law in 501 ( Data Ambariaco in conloquio sub die III. Nonas Septembris, Abieno viro clarissimo consule ). Further mentions followed in the 6th, 9th and 10th centuries and the place name finally changed to Ambaireu (1226) and Ambérieu (1402) in the Middle Ages .

West portal of the Saint-Maurice church in Ambérieux

The village church of Saint-Maurice was first mentioned in a document in 972. The castle of Ambérieux from the 14th and 15th centuries was one of the heavily fortified castles of the Dombes under the rule of the Thoire-Villars and possibly stands on the remains of the old Burgundian manor.

Three towers and the 19 m high donjon are still preserved from the medieval castle and classified as monument historique . Today they are part of the development in the village center and encompass an area in the center of which the village church was later built.
