geography

location

Beauregard is located at 173  m , about 43 km west-southwest of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse , 28 km north-northwest of the city of Lyon and 34 km south of the city of Mâcon (as the crow flies). The village is located on the left bank of the Saône on the western edge of the Ain department. Neighboring communities of Beauregard are Fareins in the north, Frans in the east and south and Villefranche-sur-Saône and Arnas in the Rhône department in the west.

topography

The area of the 0.94 km 2 municipal area includes a section on the left bank of the Saône at an indentation of the otherwise steep slope from the high plateau of the Dombes to the valley cut of the Saône. The middle of the river forms the western boundary of the municipality, while in the east it runs along the upper edge of the terrain cut. There the community reaches its highest point at 240  m . The center lies on the valley floor on the banks of the Saône. A new development area has been created on the hillside of La Saladine .

history

Château de Beauregard

Numerous individual finds scattered over the municipality indicate a settlement during Roman times . The place gained importance in the Middle Ages as the site of a castle that Gui de Chabeu, ruler of the Dombes, had built on behalf of the Beaujeu to protect against the Savoyers . However, he had to share their feudal rule with the Archbishop of Lyon, which was regulated in a contract in 1298 that first mentioned the place under the name Burgum de Bello regarda . Over time, the spelling changed from Beauregart (1441) and Beauregard en Dombes (1662) to Beauregard. As part of the principality of Dombes, Beauregard was temporarily the seat of its jurisdiction, from 1337 to 1401 and 1484 to 1502.

Attractions

Church Saint-François-d'Assise

The Château de Beauregard is located on a hill above the Saône and is a symmetrical building with a U-shaped floor plan, which is flanked on the open east side by two towers. Originally built as a fortified castle around 1260, it has been devastated or decayed several times in the course of history. Today's building was essentially built in the period from 1865 to 1868 and consists of rubble stone walls on the outside and bricks on the tower battlements and on the facade facing the inner courtyard. The wing facing the Saône stands on a portico that provides a passage from the inner courtyard to the view of the Saône valley.

The church of Saint-François-d'Assise was completed in 1855 in neo-Gothic style and replaced a smaller previous building from 1514.

Pont de Beauregard

The suspension bridge pont de Beauregard over the Saône was built in 1831 by private donors from the region, so a bridge toll was due for its crossing until 1887. Today it is only open to pedestrians and cyclists.

With 866 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Beauregard is one of the small communities in the Ain department. While the population was consistently just over 300 in the 19th century, it fluctuated around the 250 mark in the first half of the 20th century. From 1954 to 1990 there was a steady increase in population to just under 900. The local residents of Beauregard are called Beauregardien (ne) s in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Due to its small area, Beauregard has only a few local small-scale businesses. In the meantime the village has developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area, especially on the other side of the Saône in Villefranche-sur-Saône. On the southern edge of the municipality there is a small campsite right on the banks of the Saône.

The village is located at the crossroads of two old road connections that are only of secondary importance today. The D933 connects the towns on the eastern bank of the Saône via several departments, while the D44 leads from Ars-sur-Formans to Villefranche. The old town thoroughfare and the suspension bridge, which is closed to car traffic, are bypassed by a bypass road to the south. The next motorway connection to the A6 is around 5 km away. The nearest train station is in Villefranche on the Paris – Marseille line . The airport in the region is Lyon-St-Exupéry (55 km).

education

In Beauregard there is a state école primaire (elementary school with an integrated preschool ).
