Reyrieux is a French municipality with 4797 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Ain in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Trévoux in the arrondissement of Bourg-en-Bresse and is a member of the Dombes Saône Vallée municipal association .

geography

location

Reyrieux is located at 205  m , about 43 kilometers southwest of the city of Bourg-en-Bresse and 20 kilometers north of Lyon (as the crow flies) on the western edge of the Dombes landscape . The neighboring municipalities are Saint-Didier-de-Formans , Sainte-Euphémie , Misérieux , Toussieux and Rancé in the north, Saint-Jean-de-Thurigneux and Civrieux in the east, Parcieux in the south and Quincieux and Trévoux in the west.

topography

The place is located on the eastern edge of a wide plain, which is meandered by the Saône in a north-south direction. It nestles against an approximately 70 m rising edge of the terrain that separates this level from the Dombes plateau. In the area of the town center, a small brook has sunk into the edge of the terrain, which seeps back into the plain.

Local division

The development is almost exclusively limited to the Saône plain and flows there into the neighboring communities of Trévoux and Parcieux. The districts of Reyrieux are called Balmont , Le Temps , Veissieux , and parts of Port Bernalin on the banks of the Saône also belong to Reyrieux. The part of the community area on the Dombes plateau is used intensively for agriculture. Here is the hamlet of Pouilleux and the industrial area of Reyrieux.

history

The municipality of Reyrieux was settled very early. Remains of an important Roman villa, dating from the time of Emperor Augustus and inhabited until the 4th century, were discovered in the 1980s . To the east of it, graves were uncovered and various coin finds were made in a wide area. In 984 the parish church was first mentioned in writing under the Latinized name Reiriacum . Later documentary mentions vary the spelling slightly, from Raireu (1226) via Rayreu (1304), Rayrieu (1350) to Reyrieu (1449). In the Middle Ages, Reyrieux formed a rule that was under the suzerainty of the Thoire-Villars. These sold Reyrieux in 1402 together with other areas to the rule of Beaujeu under Louis II. De Bourbon . The original seat of power in Reyrieux, the fortified Château de Reyrieux , had already been destroyed at the time. Louis II. De Bourbon created the Principality of Dombes with Trévoux as its capital from his territories to the left of the Saône. As part of the principality, the place finally came under the French crown in 1762.

With the opening of a train station on the Lyon-Croix-Rousse-Trévoux line , Reyrieux was connected to the railroad in 1882. From 1897 to 1936 from Trévoux there was the possibility of taking the Trévoux – Jassans overland tram as part of the Tramways de l'Ain to Bourg-en-Bresse. Despite the similar early closure of the connection to Lyon-Croix-Rousse in 1938, the route in Reyrieux still exists.

The former district of Toussieux was raised to an independent municipality in 1900. The canton of Reyrieux was established in 1986 with the municipality as the main town and namesake.

Reyrieux is one of the medium-sized communities in the Ain department. After the population remained constant at around 1100 until the second half of the 20th century, rapid growth began in the 1960s and continues to this day.

Economy and Infrastructure

In Reyrieux there are local small businesses as well as some larger businesses with a few hundred employees, which are located in the industrial area. The agriculture still has a certain significance. Reyrieux is also a residential community whose employees work as commuters in the Lyon area.

There are no major traffic routes through the village itself. The department road D933 runs along the Saône bank and connects Reyrieux with the neighboring municipalities on the river. Road connections run across it to the plateau of the Dombes up to the communities scattered there. The nearest motorway is the Lyon north bypass, the A46 with a connection 5 km away. For long-distance TGV connections, Lyon Saint-Exupéry Airport and Bourg-en-Bresse are 40 km away .
