Saint-Maurice-de-Beynost is a French municipality with 3967 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the Ain department in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Miribel in the Bourg-en-Bresse arrondissement and is a member of the Miribel et du Plateau community .

geography

Saint-Maurice-de-Beynost is located at 181  m , about 13 kilometers northeast of the city of Lyon (as the crow flies) in the Côtière countryside . The area of ​​the 6.99 km 2 municipal area includes both part of the alluvial valley of the Rhône and part of the high plateau of the Dombes . An approximately 100 m high edge separates the two parts. The village lies entirely in the lower section and forms a continuous development with the neighboring towns of Miribel and Beynost . The municipal area extends as far as the Parc de Miribel-Jonage and is crossed by the Canal de Miribel , an artificially created tributary of the Rhône, which leads from Jons to Caluire-et-Cuire . The neighboring municipalities of Saint-Maurice-de-Beynost are Tramoyes in the north, Beynost in the east, Meyzieu in the Rhône department in the south and Miribel in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Saint-Maurice-de-Beynost formed a small lordship, which was first mentioned in 1285 and was under the lords of Montluel at the time . During the first half of the 14th century ownership changed several times, and Saint-Maurice-de-Beynost came to the Dauphin of Viennois in 1317 , then under the French crown in 1343 and to the Counts of Savoy in 1355 . With the Treaty of Lyon , the region came to France in 1601. Until the French Revolution , the place belonged to the province of Bresse , then to the canton of Montluel and from 1982 to the newly separated canton Miribel .

The transformation from a small farming village to an industrial site began in the 1920s when what was then the Société lyonnaise de soie artificielle built a factory for viscose fibers (artificial silk) on the part of the municipality facing the Rhône . After several changes of ownership, the site has been part of the Japanese Toray Industries group since 1996 .

The 22 km 2 large nature and leisure park Grand parc de Miribel-Jonage is located to a small extent in the municipality of Saint-Maurice-de-Beynost.

The former parish church of Saint-Maurice ( Lage ) consists of a single-nave church building from the 12th century, which was changed in later centuries and two chapels were added. The bell tower is from the 19th century.

With 3967 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Saint-Maurice-de-Beynost is one of the medium-sized communities in the Ain department. After the population remained constant at around 300 until the first quarter of the 20th century, it quadrupled in the period from 1926 (365 inhabitants) to 1931 (1,536 inhabitants) due to industrialization. Even after that, the community continued to grow until the trend stopped after 1999. The local residents of Saint-Maurice-de-Beynost are called Mauricia (ne) s in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

There are more than 200 companies in Saint-Maurice-de-Beynost, of which the Toray Films Europe and Cegelec sites in particular have several hundred employees. A large part of the working population are also commuters who work mainly in the similarly structured neighboring towns and the greater Lyon area.

Saint-Maurice-de-Beynost has a breakpoint on the Lyon – Genève railway line , which runs east-west across the municipality. The department road D1084 crosses the village. As the former N84 , it connects Lyon with Nantua and is also part of the highway connection between Lyon and western Switzerland. The A42 motorway also runs through the municipality and has a junction there, which also marks the end of the toll-free section Villeurbanne- Saint-Maurice-de-Beynost.

Saint-Maurice-de-Beynost has a state pre-school ( école maternelle ) and a state primary school ( école élémentaire ).
