The village is on the southern edge of the countryside and historical province of Dombes in the southwest of the Ain department. topography

The area of the municipal area of 19.76 km 2 comprises a section of the south-western Dombes, a high plateau crossed by countless lakes and bodies of water between the Saône valley in the west and the Jura in the east. With altitudes between 290  m and 296  m , most of the municipality is almost level, only on the western edge begins a slight slope through which the two creeks Grand Rieu and Ruisseau des Torrières (southern municipality border) drain the municipality soil towards the Saône. In the south and west, a few hills rise from the plain and reach a maximum height of 311  m . The village is surrounded in all directions by fields that make up almost 80% of the municipality's area. Only on the north and east edge of the cathedral begins the series of lakes and ponds typical of the Dombes (French: étang , share of the municipality area at 2.6%), which alternate with wooded areas (approx. 10%).

Lavoir and rural surroundings in Civrieux

Civrieux consists of a compact town center and many individual farms that are spread over the rest of the community. In the valley of the Grand Rieu on the border with Massieux are the hamlets Bernoud and Le Petit Bernoud, which in the Middle Ages formed their own dominion, separate from Civrieux. In the northeast lies the hamlet of Bussiges, which consists of only a few homesteads.

history

Both Civrieux and Bernoud were first mentioned in the High Middle Ages , in 984 as Sivriacus and De Berno . Both have seen changes in their spelling over the centuries, such as Syvriacus (1268), Sivreu (1285), Civrieu (18th century) and Bernout (1304). As early as 984, the places each owned a parish church within the sphere of influence of the Archdiocese of Lyon and a little later each became the center of a small rule over which the Archbishop of Lyon also exercised suzerainty. Later Civrieux and Bernoud belonged in part to the Franc-Lyonnais , a small province endowed with exceptional tax privileges and immunity from the French king. The parish church in Bernoud quickly lost its importance, so that the place later only had a simple chapel.

Village church of Civrieux

Bussiges also dates back to the 10th century and was the site of another parish church at the time, which was demolished in 1806. The spellings were Buscitgas (994), Buisseges (1187) and Buciges (1325). In contrast to the other two districts, it belonged to the dominion of Montribloud in what is now Saint-André-de-Corcy, and thus to the property of the Thoire-Villars family.

Attractions

The village church of Saint-Blaise et Saint-Denis in Civrieux was built in the 14th or 15th century and is classified as a monument historique . The nave and the crossing were renewed in 1865. The square bell tower stands over the first yoke of the choir. The equipment comes in part from the 1806 demolished church of Bussiges.
